Angels: A Novel Overview
Angels is the debut novel of acclaimed American author Denis Johnson. Angels follows Jamie and Bill, two displaced strangers who form a romantic connection after meeting by chance on a Greyhound bus. Together, they struggle through tribulations caused by poor judgment, personal displacement, and a lack of personal direction. After they are eventually separated, they must face the consequences of their actions and attempt to gain some form of personal redemption. The novel explores themes of personal choice, consequence, redemption, and the role of institutions in society.
