“Anecdote of the Jar” is a 12-line poem by American modernist poet Wallace Stevens. The poem was first published in 1919 and is part of 1923’s Harmonium, Stevens’s first book of poetry. Despite its seeming simplicity and brevity, this poem about a jar placed on a Tennessee hill has taken on numerous interpretations in critical scholarship.
