An Untamed State Overview
In the historical fiction novel An Untamed State, author Roxane Gay details the kidnapping of Mireille Duval Jameson, a Haitian native and American citizen, and Mireille's fight to regain herself after she is released. Mireille was kidnapped by an armed gang when she visited her wealthy parents in Haiti. A feisty Mireille fought against her captors in an attempt to keep them from breaking her spirit. Meanwhile, her ordeal was lengthened because her father, Sebastian Duval, refused to pay the one million dollar ransom being asked. Themes in the novel include the mechanics of kidnapping, women’s relationships, and the love between a parent and a child.
