An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States Overview
An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States is a book by scholar and historian Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz. Ortiz is a professor of Native American studies, as well as a long-time activist for Native American issues. This book provides a detailed, yet accessible, overview of the history of the United States’ genocide against Native Americans. As Dunbar-Ortiz recognizes, mainstream U.S. culture generally ignores facts about this genocide, despite how fundamental it is to U.S. history. This book seeks to highlight the truths of the United States’ consistent aggression against Native Americans, as well as the profound and lasting problems that are rooted in that history. The book examines themes of colonialism, militarism, oppression, historical perspectives, and social progress.
