American Spy Overview
Lauren Wilkinson's novel American Spy depicts the short, doomed FBI career of Marie Mitchell, an outspoken black woman from New York City. After years of training and bureaucratic busywork, Mitchell is finally given a mission to extract information from Thomas Sankara, the president of Burkina Faso. However, the mission becomes complicated when Mitchell begins to develop an affinity not only for Sankara himself, but for his politics, which run counter to American goals. This romance and espionage story explores themes of family relationships, parenthood, racial dynamics, and political convictions.
