American Royals Overview
Katharine McGee’s novel, American Royals, brings to life a reimagined American government in which the descendants of George Washington are part of an American monarchy. The work begins in the present, with the grooming of the eldest Washington daughter, Beatrice, to be the first reigning queen of America. However, complications soon ensue as her father, King George the IV, becomes terminally ill and 21-year-old Beatrice is forced to assume the throne far earlier than expected. American Royals brings to light themes of honor and duty, particularly in the context of serving the American public. Additionally, Beatrice and her younger siblings, Jeff and Samantha, struggle to come of age under the scrutiny of social media and the weight of being Royals.
