Almond Overview
Almond is a coming-of-age novel by Won-pyung Sohn. The first-person narrator and protagonist, Yunjae, is diagnosed with a brain condition defined by the inability to perceive or express emotions. After watching a violent man murder his grandmother and brutally injure his mother, Yunjae is left entirely alone. Without anyone who understands him, Yunjae must learn how to navigate the world without help. Through a series of unexpected friendships, Yunjae tries changing despite his limiting emotional capacities. The novel explores themes of love, friendship, emotion, language, and change.
