In Mieko Kawakami's novel All the Lovers in the Night, when main character and first person narrator Fuyuko quits her publishing job, she starts working from home as a full time proofreading freelancer. The work is isolating and lonely, and amplifies Fuyuko's preexisting anxiety and depression. In an attempt to alter her circumstances, Fuyuko visits a local culture center to register for some classes, at which time she meets the enigmatic Mitsutsuka. Their relationship complicates Fuyuko's understanding of herself, of intimacy, and of the past. The novel explores themes including loneliness, intimacy, and depression and anxiety.
