Sarah Thankam Mathews' All This Could Be Different follows its protagonist, Sneha, as she relocates to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for a work opportunity and struggles to settle in amidst the financial, cultural, and interpersonal pressures created by her immigrant status. As Sneha grows closer and closer with her friends Amit, Thom, and Tig, while trying to make space for a relationship with her erstwhile girlfriend Marina, Sneha finds her cultural values increasingly challenged by the injustices she witnesses in the United States. As Sneha attempts to make peace with herself and her surroundings, the novel explores themes of capitalism and class, immigration and culture, race, queerness, and community.
