All Grown Up Overview
In All Grown Up, Jami Attenberg questions the conventions of womanhood that haunt her main character, Andrea Bern, through a series of vignettes that cover the present and past. Haunted by the death of a father, sexual molestation of her early years, Andrea shuns intimacy while struggling to understand her place in a world that has no definition for someone like her. Throughout the novel, she struggles to understand her purpose in life, having given up a career as an artist, while trying to understand the strength of her familial bonds as they are strained by her dying niece.
