Aftershocks Overview
Nadia Owusu's memoir Aftershocks is a complex and fragmented rendering of the individual's quest for identity. As a young woman living in New York City, Nadia's life as a 28-year-old is nominally stable. An unwelcome visit from her stepmother and her breakup with her boyfriend of four years destabilize Nadia's sense of home and self. In order to confront who she is and the people, places, and experiences that have shaped her, Nadia spends a week in a blue chair she finds on the street. From the blue chair, she travels into the annals of her past in order to discover who she is. The memoir explores themes including, dislocation, home, and identity.
