Afterlife (Alvarez) Overview
Afterlife is a novel by Julia Alvarez. The story follows Antonia Vega, a woman in her 60s living in Vermont. Her family is originally from the Dominican Republic, but she has lived in the United States for nearly her entire life. Her husband and parents have recently died, and she has a somewhat dysfunctional relationship with her three sisters. One day, after Antonia agrees to help some local undocumented immigrants, one of Antonia’s sisters suddenly goes missing. The novel explores themes of family, morality, adversity, and perseverance.
