Abigail Overview
Magda Szabó’s novel Abigail investigates the intersections of public tragedy and interpersonal drama through the lens of its 14-year-old protagonist, Georgina (Gina) Vitay, as she begins life and finds unlikely allies at a Calvinist boarding school on the eve of Hitler’s occupation of Hungary. The novel takes place at the fictional Bishop Matula Academy, which comes to represent both prison and sanctuary for Gina as well as the site of her transition into adulthood. Weaving a thrilling adventure narrative with poetic reflections of life and death, Szabó examines the links between illusion and desire, the thresholds between adulthood and childhood, and the relationship between isolation and community, among other themes.
