“Abecedarian Requiring Further Examination of Anglikan Seraphym Subjugation of a Wild Indian Rezervation” (henceforth “Abecedarian”) is a poem in abecedarian form by the Mojave American poet Natalie Diaz. Written in 2012, the poem deals with issues of colonialism, genocide, and cultural imperialism as experienced by Native American tribes, adopting a snarky and cautionary tone in response to the state of white supremacy in America. Through Biblical images of angels, the poem portrays the propagation of Christianity by religious missionaries as an act of violence and suggests that it should not be regarded as benign or desirable.
