A Wild Swan: And Other Tales Overview
A Wild Swan: And Other Tales by Michael Cunningham is a dark retelling of the classic fairytales many grew up knowing and loving. The traditional tales being retold are "Swan Lake," "Hansel and Gretel," "Jack and the Beanstalk," "Snow White," "Rumpelstiltskin," "Beauty and the Beast," and "Rapunzel."Amidst these are other more "modern" tales such as "The Monkey's Paw," in addition to original stories of love overcoming disability in "Steadfast; Tin" and how marriage can survive royal obligations in "Ever/After." These stories all come together to form an as-yet untold (in their own way) tale collection. Themes explored in Cunningham’s anthology include those of transformation, nature, royalty, and marriage.
