A Theater For Dreamers Overview
In A Theater for Dreamers, Polly Samson illustrates a fictionalized depiction of the artistic community that did in fact live on the Greek island of Hydra in the 1960s, as seen by Erica Hart. Erica’s first-person experience on Hydra, told primarily in the present tense, bears witness to the bohemian environment the artists live in as they try to productively work. Erica’s focus, though, is on the gendered roles the women on Hydra accept, willingly and unwillingly. She gains insight into how these responsibilities hinder the women’s artistic efforts, while enabling those of the men.
