A Step from Heaven tells the story of Young Ju and her family. Young Ju is just four when her family immigrates to America from Korea. She thinks they are going to heaven, but she quickly learns that America is the opposite. Her family struggles financially, and her father drinks heavily and is abusive. When her brother is born, Young Ju is frustrated because of the freedom and respect he has because he is a boy. When her father leaves, Young Ju finds her strength and she and her mother and brother find their future.
