A More Perfect Union Overview
Jodi Daynard's A More Perfect Union is the story of Johnny Boyleston Watkins, the son of a wealthy socialite mother and a light-skinned former slave who grows up on Barbados. Watkins moves to America as a teenager to attend Harvard and make a better life for himself. He hates slavery and the entitled attitudes of the rich. Eventually, he discovers his perfect wife has been nearby all along. He marries Kate, the daughter of a family friend, and settles into a quiet life. The main themes are the ills of slavery, the brutal political scene, and Johnny's relationships.
