In Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o's short story "A Meeting in the Dark," after John impregnates an uneducated, circumcised young woman, Wamuhu, he must decide whether or not to marry her. On the verge of leaving his village for university, John is reluctant to expose the truth to his family or community. Yet he also knows abandoning Wamuhu will also result in condemnation. Tormented by his father's religious piety and the fear of losing everything, John's anxiety threatens to destroy him. The narrative explores many themes including fear and faith.
