A Council of Dolls is a book of historical fiction written by Mona Susan Power, published in 2023. It tells the story of multiple generations of Dakhóta women as they deal with attempts to destroy their culture. It is set in North Dakota, Minnesota, and Chicago between the years of 1930 and 2010. It is written largely in reverse chronological order. The novel deals with themes such as The Persistence of Trauma Across Generations, The Need to Look Past a Person’s Current Behavior to understand Who They Are, The Importance of Storytelling, The Importance of Language, and the Persistence of Shame and Guilt. This study guide uses the names of specific tribes when referring to the heritage of specific people but uses the more general term, Indigenous people, to describe people of numerous different tribes. There are two mentions of suicide in the novel and one in this guide.
