A Boy Called Bat Overview
In the novel A Boy Called Bat by Elana K. Arnold, Bixby Alexander Tam, most commonly called Bat, is not your everyday third-grader. He is intelligent, fights with his older sister, and loves animals. However, it is difficult for him to make friends and deal with frustration because he is on the autism spectrum. When Bat’s mother brings home a newborn skunk to nurse until it is old enough to go to a sanctuary for wild animals, Bat decides immediately he wants to keep it as a pet. However, he must find a way to get his mother to agree. Themes in the novel include accepting the differences of others, life with autism, and skunk traits.
