Elin Warner
Elin Warner is 32 during the events of the novel. She grew up in England with her mother and two brothers. Her brothers were constantly fighting with one another, and she always took on the role of protector for her younger brother, Sam. One day, the three of them went to the beach and the brothers fought about who could capture more crabs. Elin remembers walking away from them and leaving them alone. When she returns, she believes she finds her older brother, Isaac, standing over Sam’s dead body. However, in reality, she stayed with Sam while Isaac went to the bathroom. Sam fell into a natural pool and hit his head on a rock, dying instantly. Elin froze and did not attempt to pull him out of the water.
