The major theme of "The Dunwich Horror" is that of the smallness of human experience in a vast and largely unknown universe. This theme is central to much of Lovecraft's work. In his Cthulhu Mythos stories, Lovecraft emphasizes the insignificance of humanity by making it only one of a number of sentient races that have dominated Earth and will dominate the planet after mankind has disappeared.
