The narrator recalls a forest fire that was reported by the Reno Gazette in June, 1938, when a firefighting plane accidentally pulled scuba diver Delmer Darion out of the lake as it scooped up water to dump on the fire. Between the lake and the tree, Darion died of a heart attack. The next day, pilot Craig Hansen, overcome with guilt, committed suicide.
