The name of the Clive family is appropriate in at least two ways: the most famous Clive in history is Robert Clive, an eighteenth-century English baron who established the British Indian empire, and the Clives are regal and colonial in their bearing and style. Secondly, the name sounds like the word cleave, and the family is split apart emotionally and, by novel's end, physically.
