Why do the girls purposely keep their reasons for remaining in London from their grandfather in the novel, Has Anyone Seen Heather?

The girls are afraid to admit to tell their grandfather what has happened, because they know he will insist that they immediately return to Dublin. They also fear that the misadventure will further fuel the ill feeling between him and his daughter... their mother.
