Chan writes his book in the first-person point of view, referring often to the readers and himself as "we." This idea that Chan is talking not only about the habits of other Christians, but also about his own actions, gives the reader the idea that Chan also realizes his own shortcomings.

Although Chan deals with some material that could be considered very guilt-inspiring and "heavy" to the readers, he does not present the material in a way that is overbearing or guilt-inducing. He does not propose to judge his reader. A great deal of this lack of judgment on Chan's part comes from the fact that he supports his arguments with quotes from the scriptures.
