The title, Cloudy in the West, has great symbolic value. The clouds are the new troubles Joey's romantic expectations of western life really turn out to be. They represent both new physical troubles he must surmount as the Western life turns out as hard as what was left behind and the interior disappointments and frustrations he suffers as his romantic illusions are dispelled.
