Summary: A biography of Louis Riel (1844-1885), a revolutionary man who was a hero to the Metis in Canada, a treasonous rebel to Ontarians, and a brave defender to the French Catholic minority in Quebec. Riel's hanging for treason still remains a controversial subject in Canada.
Louis Riel was a revolutionary man. He gave hope to all those were a different race. He was a hero to the Metis; he made strides in the political world to make sure the Metis were recognized as equals. Ontarians believed Riel was "a treasonous rebel and the murderer of Thomas Scott." Quebeckers through of him as a brave defender of the minority of French Catholics after his death a storm of protests broke out in Quebec. Riel made an impression on many people; Wilfred Laurier was greatly impressed with Riel. When he became prime minister he wanted the French and English to "Live in peace and harmony" Honoré Mercier saw Riel's death as "a declaration of war on the influence of French Canada in Confederations, a violation of right of justice."
