Dictionary of Literary Biography on Nicholasa Mohr
Nicholasa Mohr, a significant New York-Puerto Rican (Nuyorican) writer, focuses on life in the city with particular emphasis on the lives of adolescents and women. Her books reflect the psychological, spiritual, and physical experiences of the Nuyorican traveling between two cultures, island and mainland. Her novels and short stories span the time period from the 1940s to the 1980s, capturing the changing and evolving role of the Puerto Rican community in New York as it extends from the Bronx and the Barrio (Spanish Harlem) and as the generational ties weaken among members of extended families on the mainland and on the island. Her writing, based largely on her own experiences, explores the joys and sorrows of living in the Barrio, the Bronx, and Losaida, the Lower East Side. Mohr is also a distinguished teacher, lecturer, and visual artist whose stories are collected and anthologized in numerous textbooks.
