Bernice Zamora's considerable reputation as a poet rests largely on one book, Restless Serpents (1976). Other poems, essays, reviews, and short stories by Zamora appeared in journals and anthologies during the formative years of the Chicano Movement; and these writings, together with papers she has presented and personal efforts to encourage other Chicano writers and artists, have earned her a respected position. Her theoretical work on archetypes has particularly affected others so that her influence must also be a factor in considering her importance. In categorizing her in his 1979 essay "Las poesía chicanas: Una nueva trayectoria," Salvador Rodriguez del Pino concludes that her poetry often goes beyond what is normally thought of as Chicana feminism: "Bernice Zamora ha tenido la distinción o el dudable halago de que su poesía 'parece haber sido escrita por un hombre'" (Bernice Zamora has had the distinction or...
